South Florida's Top Pediatric Occupational Therapist

All children are motivated to move and explore but not all in the same exact way or at the same exact pace. Without opportunities for play and exploration within their different environments (home, school, playground. . .) children cannot learn or develop appropriate skills.

Occupational therapists create individualized treatment plans to help children engage in their main occupations: play, self-care, education, and social participation. Through active engagement, children develop a sense of themselves and how they fit in the world around them.

Our Pediatric Occupational Therapy Services

I work in the child’s natural environment, whether in the office, at home, daycare, or school

Motor Skills Development

Motor skills are comprised of gross and fine motor skills which are essential for children to explore and play. These skills begin developing right from birth and continue throughout the lifespan. Gross motor skills are larger motor movements (rolling, crawling, walking, jumping, running), while fine motor skills are smaller and more refined motor movements (using tools/utensils, buttoning a shirt, manipulating art supplies).

Sensory Processing

Sensory processing is the ability to use our senses to take information in from our environment and use that information to engage in everyday activity. We have 8 senses: tactile, vestibular (movement), proprioception (deep pressure), auditory (noise), olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste), vision, and interception (withing our body: hunger, tired, need to use the bathroom). It is essential to use sensory information effectively and efficiently to engage in our daily occupations.

Handwriting

Writing is a form a communication, it is written communication. Difficulties with handwriting can stem from a multitude of difficulties and occupational therapists are skilled at determining the cause of handwriting difficulties and treating those underlying deficits.

Feeding

Is your child a picky eater? Do they refuse/restrict foods? or do they just have difficulty scooping and/or bringing food to their mouth? Occupational therapists work with you and your child using a multisensory approach to improve mealtime struggles.

Play

Play is a main occupation of children and it is the way they learn motor, cognitive, and social skills. Occupational therapists will get to the root cause of play difficulties and provide treatment to improve this engagement in this vital occupation.

Self- Care Activities

This includes all the activities children do to take care of themselves (dressing, bathing, toileting, feeding, grooming). Occupational therapists are skilled with evaluating underlying reasons for difficulties in caring for oneself and again provide treatments to improve independence. Independence in self-care is essential for the development of self-esteem, self-worth, and self-advocacy.

Occupational Therapy Process

An evaluation is the first and most essential step in the OT process. During this process, I will get to know your child, your family, and your main concerns. Standardized evaluations with formal reports are provided at the request of the family. We will explore your goals and develop a plan of care to help you meet those goals. Treatment plans are individualized and created in collaboration with you and your family. Re-evaluation is an ongoing process and occurs throughout the intervention sessions to ensure we are meeting our goals. Progress notes are also available upon request from the family.

The way we Spread Love & Care

Parkland is the best OT around! Missy was super professional from the first day that we met and did an amazing job with my daughter. My daughter was diagnosed with torticollis at 6 weeks old. After a few months of working together and following some homework stretches that Missy had recommended, our daughter's head rounded out and her torticollis resolved.

Telehealth is how I'm helping families through COVID-19 and beyond. We rapidly implemented Telehealth as an option for all of the clients we serve. The therapeutic services we provide are vital for children's success in life. Our community, state, and country are experiencing extraordinary circumstances that create a barrier for children to participate in learning, development, and their community. These are circumstances that are unlikely to be resolved soon. During this time our families may be feeling a wide range of emotions. We're here and we're all in this together.
